Visual art! Last week we studied art history and the art movements. So the following week we had to choose a specific artwork and its author and take inspiration from it. Then, we had to brainstorm what 'identity' means to us. How others define ourselves, and how we understand ourselves. We had to create an artwork depicting our identity based on existing artworks.(inspiration only)
The artwork i choose is "The Nightmare" by Henry Fuseli in the art movement known as "Romanticism". Romanticism emerged from a desire for freedom through imagination rather than reason and functions through feeling rather than thinking. So the main focus of my art assignment is to portray a work where I can evoke emotions out of fellow viewers. 18th century Romanticism artworks also included worlds of fantasy such as the ghoulish, infernal, terrible, and nightmarish. Therefore i tried to portray eerie deep sea creatures in my artwork. Because fear and terror evoke the most intense of human emotions, I established a dark room to create a creepy atmosphere within the painting. In " The Nightmare" Fuseli depicts an incubis upon a young woman to describe the feeling of suffocation during the night. In scientific terms this is known as sleep apnea, but Fuseli took an emotional and fantasy approach which resulted in the mythical creature incubis. Like Fuseli, i tried to depict the feeling of constant fear and feeling of suffocation in a dark damp room, and a window that opens up to the dark deep sea. I would like the viewers to feel the crampness and restriction of a small interior but can find no escape outside because of the lurking monsters. The girl figure in my artwork represents my own self trying to cover up the glass window with a big red drappery. Logically this would seem impossible because the cloth is small and the window is twice the hight of the girl. This depicts the helpless situation the figure is in and her face potrays how hopeless she is.
