Mechanics of Motion -character analyzing-

For this week's class assessment we watched Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This is a blog post about character analyzing following the character "Magic Mirror".

Character Traits:

  • magical, all-knowing being : the mirror can search for people who exactly fit the vague image of "fairest of them all" description given by the Queen
  • throughout the movie, the magic mirror maintains a creepy dark voice. He remains monotonous to portray the eerie seriousness of his character. The magic mirror only has one set of facial expression: he is always portrayed unsmiling but neither is he frowning. He is stoic and momentous.
  • To show that he is a magical being and an entity of prophecy, the magic mirror's speech is always in rhymes.
  • does not tell lies or tries to avoid a question from the Queen; very straightforward
  • appearance: the spirit inside the mirror has a tinge of sickly green to its face with casting shadows of purple and yellow tint. The frame of the mirror is decorated with two spiraling snakes/ serpents. (this portrays abhorrence but also represents as a symbol for knowledge)

Role in the story:

  • to serve the Queen as holder of information and to provide for what she desires to know the most.
  • A slave to the Queen, forever confined in the premises of the mirror frames.
  • fuels the Queen's envy towards Snow White.

Goals in the story:

  • To serve and please the Queen, only to do what she asks
  • though serves for the Queen's villainous usage, the magic mirror shows no motives of it's own.

What they fear the most:

  • For me, I think that the magic mirror's biggest fear is to upset the Queen because she basically controls him and has his life in her hands. The Queen can summon the mirror anytime and therefore can silence him anytime. The magic mirror undoubtedly would not exist without the powers of the Queen to summon him forth.

Exaggerated characteristics:

  • creepiness and eeriness. The entity inside the mirror is a blank mask with void black holes for the eyes and mouth. This creates the illusion of it having no life inside of it.
  • mysterious. the entity is always shrouded in shadows and abundant smoke. this invokes the imagery of fire and rising flames

Relationship with other characters:

  • the magic mirror works for the Queen
  • he is the factor for the Queen's chase to kill Snow White
  • he acts as one of the catalysts that brought the Queen to her own demise (his answers to her questions causes her to take drastic actions)
