Today's practice in class is about light and shadows.
First of all, what is chiaroscuro? In the art terms it means the play of light and shadows in a painting. In the art books i have read, the pioneer of the chiaroscuro technique in drawing and paintings was Caravaggio and Rembrant. During the 16th century in Eurpe, chiaroscuro became an important technique in the Mannerism and Baroque art movements. One of the popular paintings that I ALWAYS see in art history books is Caravaggio's "The calling of St. Matthew" shown bellow:
Ok, so enough of lovely art history. Moving on..
In class, Miss Sheila provided us with 2 interior pictures and alot of texture photos.
For the first interior she guided us through the process of adding shadows on 'multiply' layer by applying black shades to the areas and places where we think shadows would appear.
Then, we create another layer and change it as 'overlay' for the lighting. We had to keep in mind about the sources of light and the reflected light that bounces back from other objects. By using brush, we pick any light color and start coloring in the places where light is emited and reflected.
